The Swedish natural gas system structure

The Swedish natural gas system is a pipeline system that runs from its connection point in Dragör, Denmark, to Stenungsund, Sweden. It supplies energy for heating and cooking to a total of 37,000 Swedish customers, of which approximately 34,000 are households. Other customers include industries and district heating companies.

The natural gas system and consumption

The Swedish natural gas system is built on one transmission system and several distribution systems. The transmission system, the actual main pipeline, is 601 kilometers long and the distribution system has a total length of 3546 kilometers. All pipes on land are laid underground.

The gas comes from Denmark

Every year, the Swedish natural gas system transmits approximately 19 TWh of energy, depending on the need during the winter period. It is primarily natural gas from Denmark that is transported through the network.

The consumption of natural gas accounts for two per cent of Sweden's total energy usage. In the municipalities of southern and western Sweden that have an extended network, natural gas accounts for twenty per cent of energy usage, which is an amount equivalent to the combined usage in the rest of Europe.

Biogas in the natural gas network

Biogas is manufactured in plants that utilize biological waste and gases from landfill sites. Biogas can also be manufactured through gasification of biofuel, and is then called biomethane. Biogas has a lower energy content than natural gas. Biogas that has been upgraded to natural gas quality is beginning to be transmitted in the pipeline system to an increasing extent. But it is still a small amount in relation to the total gas consumption in the natural gas system.
